Some Foods to Eat and Avoid in Acid Reflux

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is also known as acid reflux. It is a disorder that disturbs our digestive system. It is because of the backflow of acids from the stomach into the esophagus. It is a very uncomfortable situation. It also destroys the lining of the esophagus. A gastroenterologist in Karachi suggested some foods that can reduce the symptoms of acid reflux and foods that should be avoided. Let’s discuss them in detail:

Foods to Avoid 

1- High-Fat Food

Foods that contain high fats must be avoided. These foods(nearby shawarma) include fried foods, full-fat dairy products, etc. High-fat foods increase the risk of acid reflux. The symptoms can become worse because of these foods. It’s better to avoid them

2- Citrus Fruits 

Highly acidic fruits can disturb the lining of the esophagus. These fruits include citrus fruits, grapefruits, etc. As we know citrus fruits contain vitamin C. But if your digestive system is disturbed you must avoid their intake. 

3- Spicy Foods

Chili powder, hot peppers, and some other spicy foods can disturb the lining of the esophagus. They can also worsen the symptoms. It is better to avoid spicy foods. 

4- Chocolate 

Caffeine and theobromine are present in chocolate. These two substances help to relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). As LES relaxes, the acid present in the stomach can flow back. It causes symptoms of acid reflux. 

5- Carbonated Beverages 

Soda, sparkling water, seltzer, etc. are carbonated beverages that are not good for your health. These drinks increase the risk of acid reflux. Carbonated drinks put pressure on LES and the stomach expands. Due to this acid flows back from the stomach to the esophagus. 

6- Mint

Peppermint and spearmint relax LES. But it makes the symptoms of acid reflux worse. It can also cause a burning sensation which can also worsen the symptoms. 

7- Onions and Tomatoes 

Tomatoes and onions are highly acidic. They can disturb the lining of the esophagus. They trigger the symptoms of acid reflux. However, they are a good source of some other minerals and nutrients. But if you are a patient with acid reflux, you must avoid these vegetables. Because intake of these vegetables can disturb your digestive system. 

8- Caffeine 

Foods containing caffeine such as coffee must be avoided. It relaxes LES but can induce the symptoms of acid reflux. Always inhibit the excessive intake of caffeine-containing products. These products can also damage the esophagus lining. So, limit your intake of caffeine. 

Foods to Eat

1- Oatmeal 

People suffering from acid reflux should add oatmeal to their diet. It makes our digestive system better and healthy. Symptoms of acid reflux are reduced by it. It can be easily digested because of the low fats. 

2- Lean Proteins

Chicken, tofu, and fish contain lean proteins. They are easily digestible and reduce the symptoms of acid reflux. These foods have low fat in them. People with acid reflux should add lean proteins to their diet. They will help to make your digestive system better. 

3- Vegetables 

Vegetables are good for overall health. They are low in fat and easily digestible. People with acid reflux symptoms must add vegetables to their diet. However, vegetables such as tomatoes and onions must be avoided due to their high acidity. 

4- Whole Grains 

People with acid reflux must add whole grains to their diet. Brown rice, whole grain pasta, etc. are foods that are rich in fiber. They also help to regulate digestion. They are also low in fats. 

5- Non-Citrus Fruits 

Fruits such as bananas, apples, etc. are low acidic. They do not disturb the lining of the esophagus. Furthermore, these fruits contain some minerals and nutrients that are good for health.

6- Yogurt 

Probiotics can be obtained from yogurt. These are beneficial bacteria that help in digestion. Always prefer yogurt with low fats. Because high-fat sugar can worsen the symptoms of acid reflux.

Leafy green vegetables are good for digestion. They also contain some nutrients and minerals. They are also low in fat and help to reduce symptoms of acid reflux. Water is important for your overall health and helps to improve digestion. Drink plenty of water each day. It will help to improve your digestion. It will also help patients with acid reflux to reduce their symptoms. 

8- Almonds 

Healthy fats and proteins are present in almonds. They also help to regulate digestion. Also, use unsalted almonds because salted almonds can disturb the health of patients with acid reflux.
