How Long Does the Passport Remain Valid in India

The validity of a passport in India is 

Adult Passport Holders:  The validity of a passport held by adults in India is 10 years.

Minor Passport Holders:  For people under the age of 18 the validity is 5 years.

It is the responsibility of the passport’s owner to keep track of when the passport’s expiration date and to renew it before it really expires and apply for renewal with all the documents required for passport renewal.

Documents required for passport renewal in India

For renewing your passport in India, one must submit all the documents required for passport renewal. The passport renewal application can be submitted online through Passport Seva Portal it is important to apply for renewal of your Indian passport before expiry date as the process of renewal may take 15-20 days after the appointment at Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.

  • Original old passport
  • Self-attested copies of the first two pages and the last two pages of the passport.
  • Self-attested copy of the page of observation, if any, made by the Passport Issuing Authority.
  • Passport-size photograph: Two recent passport-size colored photographs (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm) with a white background and no glasses, hat or cap.
  • Address proof: Any one of the following documents can be submitted as an address proof: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Driving License, Rent Agreement, Utility bill (electricity, water, gas), Bank Passbook, or Income Tax Assessment Order.
  • Date of birth proof: Any one of the following documents can be submitted as a date of birth proof: Birth Certificate, PAN card, Aadhaar card, driving license, or school leaving certificate.
  • Self-attested copy of the ECR/ Non-ECR page. Status: If an applicant is eligible for ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required), he/she must provide documents that support the claim.
  • Proof of documents which eliminate the cause, if any, of issuance of Short Validity Passport (SVP).
  • Self-attested copy of the validity extension page, if any, of the Short Validity Passport (SVP).

Note that the documents required for a passport appointment may change depending on the applicant’s situation.
