Yes, the definition of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has been revised by the Government of India in June 2020. The new definition of MSMEs is based on the criteria of investment and annual turnover, as follows:

  1. Micro Enterprises: Enterprises with investment up to Rs. 1 crore and turnover up to Rs. 5 crore
  2. Small Enterprises: Enterprises with investment up to Rs. 10 crore and turnover up to Rs. 50 crore
  3. Medium Enterprises: Enterprises with investment up to Rs. 50 crore and turnover up to Rs. 250 crore

This new definition replaces the earlier definition of MSMEs, which was based on investment in plant and machinery. The earlier definition had been in place since 2006.

The new definition aims to provide a more precise and realistic classification of MSMEs based on their investment and turnover. It also seeks to address the challenges faced by small businesses in accessing credit and other benefits, by providing them with more significant benefits and incentives based on their size and scale of operations.

MSMEs play a crucial role in the growth and development of the Indian economy, and the revised definition of MSMEs is expected to provide a significant boost to the sector by enabling them to access various schemes and incentives offered by the government.
